Need a well site or a removed structure marked? Tell us the site and the water depth.
When a Well Site or Removed Structure Needs a Marker
A marker buoy shows mariners where something is under the water or where a structure used to be. Operators use our steel marker buoys at:
- Subsea wells and well sites
- Decommissioned platforms
- Pipelines and other marine hazards
The marking requirement for your site comes from your permit or the agency that issued it. Send it to us with the site location and water depth, and we will quote the buoy, light, mooring and installation to match.
Choose the Right Marker Buoy
| Buoy | Size | Water depth | Best for | Buy or rent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BL 620 lighted sound buoy | 6 ft x 20 ft steel | Call us with your site | Subsea wells, decommissioned platforms and marine hazards in rivers, estuaries and moderately exposed open water | Buy or rent |
| 58/14 hazard and subsea well marker buoy | 5 ft x 14 ft steel | Up to 120 ft | Subsea wells and marine hazards | Buy or rent |
| 58/10 steel buoy | 5 ft x 10 ft steel | Call us with your site | Shallower well sites and hazards | Buy or rent |
| 5x11 to 9x35 steel buoys | 5 ft x 11 ft up to 9 ft x 35 ft steel | Call us with your site | Larger or more exposed sites | Buy or rent |
Every Wet Tech steel buoy has a two-compartment steel hull with no foam. Marking a well or hazard in marsh or shallow inland water? See our shallow water polyethylene buoys (Made in the USA).
Lights and Sound Signals
The BL 620 takes the Sabik M650H, WT-2NM SC or CR1100 Class C lantern, or the lantern your spec calls for, plus a USCG sound signal horn with a 1/2 mile range. See our marine lights for buoys.
Built in Our Louisiana Fab Shop and Kept in Stock
We build our BL 620 and 58/14 steel buoys in our Louisiana fab shop and keep them in stock. Made in Louisiana. When you send a PO or approval, your buoys can be on a truck within 1 hour.
Moorings Sized to the Site
A marker buoy is only as good as its mooring. We offer mooring system rentals with anchors from 700 lb to 60,000 lb, plus chain, shackles and mooring wire, sized for your water depth and conditions. Our steel buoys are also used as midline buoys in mooring systems. See our steel mooring buoys.
Buy or rent the buoy and the mooring system from one company.
Buoy Recovery, Maintenance and Mooring Inspections
We provide buoy recovery, buoy maintenance and mooring inspections for marker buoys on station. On every maintenance trip:
- We inspect the GPS, the light, the shackles, the mooring wire, the chain and the anchor blocks.
- We confirm the buoy is on location when we arrive and again before we leave.
- Anything that looks questionable gets replaced before the buoy goes back on station.
When a job is finished, we recover the buoy and mooring. Recovered steel buoys can go through our buoy overhaul before their next job.
Buy or Rent
Rent for a short job or until the site is cleared, or buy for long-term marking. Our buoy rentals and mooring system rentals can include installation, maintenance and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which buoy should I use to mark a subsea well?
For most well sites we recommend the 58/14 (5 ft x 14 ft steel) for up to 120 ft of water depth, or the smaller 58/10 (5 ft x 10 ft steel). For more exposed water, the BL 620 lighted sound buoy (6 ft x 20 ft steel) is our standard choice. Tell us the water depth and the site and we will recommend the right buoy. See our hazard marker buoys and navigational buoys.
Can I rent a subsea well marker buoy?
Yes. The BL 620 and 58/14 steel buoys are kept in stock, and you can buy or rent them. We can also rent you the complete mooring system, with anchors from 700 lb to 60,000 lb.
How fast can you ship?
We keep BL 620 and 58/14 steel buoys in stock in Louisiana, and they can be on a truck within 1 hour of a PO or approval.
Where are your steel buoys made?
Our steel buoys are built in our Louisiana fab shop in Maurice, Louisiana. Made in Louisiana. Wet Tech Energy has been in business since 1999.

No. All of our steel buoys, including the BL 620, 58/14 and 58/10, have a two-compartment steel hull with no foam. Only our poly buoys are foam filled.
What do you check when you maintain a marker buoy?
We inspect the GPS, the light, the shackles, the mooring wire, the chain and the anchor blocks. We confirm the buoy is on location when we arrive and again before we leave, and anything that looks questionable gets replaced before the buoy goes back on station.
Can you recover the buoy and mooring when the job is done?
Yes. We provide buoy recovery as well as maintenance, and recovered steel buoys can be overhauled for their next job. See buoy overhaul.
Do you inspect existing moorings?
Yes. We provide mooring inspections, and we replace any worn chain, wire or hardware we find before the buoy goes back on station.
